UD Principle #1: Equitable Use

Starship Zenith

Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math (STEAM) and Universal Design (UD):

Universal Design is a concept of design which avoids restrictive building codes and/or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards, by incorporating inclusive structures that are more usable by everyone, regardless of their abilities or limitations. For example, rather than separating entrances for handicapped, all entrances are designed to be equipped to handle everyone including those with disabilities.

There are seven principles of universal design. The first principle is Equitable Use. The Principle of Equitable Use has four guidelines:

  1. Provide the same means of use for all users: identical whenever possible; equivalent when not.

       2. Avoid segregating or stigmatizing users.

       3. Provisions for privacy, security, and safety should be equally         available to all users.

       4. Make the design appealing to all users.
